BEESTS OF BURDEN

Mara River, Kenya 2017

Too often Wildebeests are portrayed as helpless victims of another greater, more glorious beast. They lead tough and thankless lives, mostly overlooked and dismissed until they wind up between the jaws of an apex predator. While not as powerful or dangerous as the Cape Buffalo, and not as aesthetically pleasing as the Zebra, these migratory masters are the lifeblood of the African Savannah. This powerful image exudes strength, bravery, dedication and leadership - words seldomly used when describing the humble wildebeest.

While this image captures the climax of their journey, their story starts long before this moment and will continue long after it. The survival of the plains rests on their shoulders, and they deliver year after year, as they have done since the beginning of time.

This image begs for a second, third and fourth look.  In fact, each time I look at it I appreciate something new that I had previously not seen.  I hope others have have a similar experience.
